A sclerotium is a hard surfaced resting body of fungal cells resistant to unfavorable conditions. Sclerotium may remain dormant for long periods of time and resume growth on the return of favorable conditions.

Cultivation[]

Many sclerotia forming species are cultivated for the consumption of the sclerotium itself, while for others, sclerotia is merely a step in the fruiting process.
